Visiting a dermatologist for the first time can feel overwhelming, but at Mt. Lebanon Dermatology, we make the process smooth and welcoming. Here’s what you can expect when you arrive for your appointment.
Check-In and Arrival
Before your visit, please bring:
✔️ A valid photo ID
✔️ Your insurance card
✔️ A completed new patient medical history form
To ensure a smooth experience, we recommend arriving at least 15 minutes early to complete any remaining paperwork. When you enter the building, take the elevator or stairs down one level—the elevator doors will open directly into our office lobby. Head to the front desk to check in, and then relax in our comfortable waiting area, where we offer games, snacks, and reading material.
Meeting Your Provider
- Once your appointment is ready, a medical assistant (MA) or nurse will greet you and take you to an exam room. They will:
- Review your basic medical history
- Discuss your skin concerns
- Take note of any past treatments
Then, your dermatologist or physician assistant (PA) will meet with you to perform a thorough skin evaluation.
What Happens During a Skin Exam?
A general skin exam involves a head-to-toe assessment of your skin, checking for any concerning spots, growths, or conditions. If you have a specific concern—such as acne, eczema, moles, or rashes—your provider will evaluate the area, discuss potential causes, and recommend treatment options. In some cases, clinical photos may be taken for your medical records.
Treatment and Next Steps
Depending on your diagnosis, some treatments can be performed the same day, including:
✔️ Skin biopsies
✔️ Cryotherapy for precancerous spots
✔️ Minor procedures
If you need Mohs surgery or additional treatments, our front desk staff will assist you in scheduling follow-up appointments. You’ll also receive post-visit care instructions and any necessary prescriptions before leaving.
Insurance and Payment
We accept most major insurance plans, except Medicaid. Cosmetic treatments are self-pay, and payment plans are available—please see our financial policy for details.
Cancellations and No-Show Policy
Due to the high demand for our care, we require at least 24-hour notice for cancellations. This allows us to accommodate other patients in need.
Patients who repeatedly cancel last-minute or miss appointments may be subject to fees or potential dismissal from the practice.
For Mohs surgery and general dermatology appointments, same-day cancellations and no-shows may result in a charge. Please notify us as soon as possible if you are unable to attend your appointment.
Telehealth and Follow-Up
We also offer telehealth visits for follow-ups, making it easy to stay on top of your skincare from the comfort of your home.
At Mt. Lebanon Dermatology, we are committed to providing expert, patient-centered care in a welcoming environment. We look forward to seeing you at your first visit!
